Yes, this is possibly the coolest project ever…

This fall, Creative Time will launch The Last Pictures, an archival disc created by artist Trevor Paglen, into outer space, where it will orbit the earth for billions of years affixed to the exterior of the communications satellite EchoStar XVI.

Intrigued? Come hear artist Trevor Paglen speak about this project at SFMOMA on Thursday at 7pm! He’ll also be signing copies of his book, The Last Pictures.

What’s it called and where is it? Stairwell’s is a roving curatorial project organized by Sarah Hotchkiss and Carey Lin. Stairwell’s takes the form of short term site-specific exhibitions, takeaway publications, and group excursions (Field Trips). So far Stairwell’s programming has taken place in the Noonan Building (Pier 70), 1000 Van Ness, the Carville Annex (Outer Sunset), a home in West Oakland, the UC Berkeley campus, and the Berkeley Art Museum.
This image is from our most recent Field Trip, during a noisemaking session in the extremely resonant Kroeber Hall stairwell.

A roving curatorial project, Stairwell’s is an inspiring example of an Art MicroHub that doesn’t rely on a specific site or location to thrive— rather, it’s the ideas and the people behind the project that make it successful.

A SITESPACE Los Angeles
Reside I Create I Show
This concise space inside a traveling apparatus provides strong natural guidelines for new works. The artist-in-residence must understand and adhere to the spatial limitations presented, and the benefit at-large—mobility. Once the artist has visited the caravan and establishes parameters of where and how they will conduct the intentions of their work, the structural purpose of the caravan begins to take shape. This unique space of production becomes an integrated part of the works made, along with the opportunity to further explore “the outer space”, outside the walls of the mobile caravan. Additionally, there is a restriction in the way the caravan presents the produced works establishing a transient condition for viewing. The process of the work is brought to viewers attention through documentation of the artists practice within the caravan. Documentation will remain a constant throughout the time the artist has entered the space until the closing of the exhibition or events. A SITESPACE is an all encompassing format. It serves the function of the artist studio, as well as a space to exhibit finished works.
